Comprehending and Predicting

For the story, The Last Dragon, students did an additional comprehension skill called "Making Conclusions."  They were given the following three conclusions and had to find details that supported them.  You can ask your child what some of the details were that they came up with.
  • Nobody wants the dragon.
  • Peter is very excited about fixing the dragon.
  • Thd ragon's eyes are the most difficult part to fix.
At the beginning of the story, students were shown four pictures and had to write predictions as to how they thought the picture would fit the story.  At the end, we went back over them to see if their predictions were confirmed or disconfirmed.  You can ask your child how the pictures actually fit with the story.  The pictures were of:
  • Chinatown
  • A pair of eyes
  • A person with a suicase
  • A large "dragon" with people underneath it

  2. When we did the conclusion work sheet. We really had to think to try not to write the main details. And the work sheet was really fun.

  3. It is fun predicting, because we get to find out what happens when we read. We can find out if our predictions are right if we keep on reading the story.

  4. On my conclusion sheet [for The Last Dragon] on the 1st circle it saidPage 455:Nobodywants the dragon we are supposed to put details of why the people didn't want the dragon so the class all put in the first circle because its old and dusty, its mouth is wired shut,it had no eyes, tail was ripped,by old duck eggs and old barrels. Then in the 2nd circle my partner,Jozlyn, and I, worked together to find details like we did in the circle so we read what the circle said and it said",Page 459:Peter is very excited about fixing the dragon."So the details we found was that Peter said,"That he would clean it by himself".,Peter didn't care if the color faded,Peter is so caught on the dragon he forgot his manners when he asked for it,and the last one is Peter ran to the shop to ask for the dragon then the very last circle said Page 467 and 468:The dragons eyes are the most difficult to fix.the details we found for that is that Peter couldn't find eyes, the eyes has to be blessed by a preist,Peter wouldn't stop looking for eyes. peter goes around asking people to help for eyes.

  6. I use to think the eyes in the 4 corners were eyes of a man in a dragon. But it turned out to be the eyes of the dragon. That were very hard to find because they had to be bless by a priet and they couldn't be painted by and artist.I also use to think that the man with the suit case was getting ready to get in the dragon for a fesibal but it tuned out to be a boy going to Chinatown to meet his great aunt.I use to think the picture of Chinatown was that the people have to get ready for a festival but it was the place the story takes place. Finally the picture of the dragon and the 4 people were that they made a big party to say good-by to peter
